Clumpy
Exhibition: A Million Stories and Counting

Nikolas Brückmann, Fabia Matveev and Yuriy Matveev tell countless stories in a shop window in Rüsselsheim's city. Stories about Clumpy, Hare and Bear. The work consists of more than 100 interchangeable illustrations, which randomly combine at the whim of fate to create or even provoke new stories. The exhibition was initiated and organised by Nikolas Brückmann as part of his scholarship with the City of Rüsselsheim.

Work right!

Beim diesjährigen Wettbewerb »Work right!« wurden 15.000 Plakate aus 133 Ländern eingesandt. Nicht nur die teilnehmenden Gestalter kommen aus Europa, Afrika, Asien, Australien, sowie Nord- und Südamerika sondern auch die Life und Online Jury. Unterstützt wird die Organisation von Lack Lang, ehemaliger französischer Minister für Kultur und Bildung: „Poster for tomorrow provides charities and good causes with the means to harness a most powerful tool to raise awareness. One year, it's the abolition of the death penalty, the next, the right to education for all. I am honoured to be an ambassador for this initiative; an initiative that fights for social progress. We all have the right to work without discrimination or exploitation of our gender, age, nationality or physical condition. We all have the right to work for a wage that is fair reward for our labour and that will enable us to support ourselves and our families. The right to work protects us from child labour, gender and age discrimination and exploitation in all its forms. It entitles us all to the same opportunities, benefits and protection from exploitation or malpractice«

Die Jury hat insgesamt 100 Plakate ausgewählt, die in einem Katalog sowie in einer Wanderaustellung mit dem Titel »A day for tomorrow« veröffentlicht werden. Das erste Mal am 10. Dezember zum »International Human Rights Day«.

Great success for students of HfG

Matthias Bär, Nadine Kolodziey, Felix Kosok, Xi Luo, Karin Rekowski, Yuan Wang and Yang Xiang are amongst the 100 best participants in the international poster competition »Mut zur Wut 2014«. This year 1220 participants from 54 countries sent in 2573 posters. The choice of topic was free, but within the title »Mut zur Wut« (“have the courage to be angry”) the work had to focus on a critical social, political or personal issue, displayed in an expressive motif. »Mut zur Wut« aims at creating consciousness for global and social problems and is targeted at overcoming geographical and ideological boundaries. Apart from being a challenge to be courageous the initiative is also an instruction to look closely at the world! »Mut zur Wut« is a quest to creatively critique the circumstances and events that surround and concern us in everyday life. The most telling works will be exhibited exactly where they belong: in public spaces, at the heart of the action. This year's jury were Rolf Mueller, Trix Barmettler, Igor Gurovich, Bijan Sayfouri and Patrick Thomas.

»What design can do!« An international conference about the impact of design, 8 to 9 May 2014

May
HfG-Excursion to Amsterdam

More than 30 students of HfG Offenbach will share this event. What Design Can Do is an international event investigating the power of design as an agent for social renewal. At the heart of the event is a two-day conference in the centre of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. As the design profession has expanded enormously in recent years, so too has the role played by designers in social, economic and sustainable developments. As a result, design can sometimes appear as a cure-all that has the solution for every major problem we face today. At the other end of the spectrum we have the type of design that has made aesthetics without substance a goal in itself. Both of these extremes inflate the very notion of design. What Design Can Do was formed in 2011 by a group of designers from various fields, with the aim of separating what is valuable from what is worthless. By showcasing best practices and visions, raising discussions and facilitating collaboration between disciplines, What Design Can Do wants to raise awareness among the public for the potential of creativity. At the same time, What Design Can Do calls on designers to take responsibility and consider how their work can impact the wider society. What Design Can Do is a platform for designers of all disciplines to manifest the social potential of their profession and to discuss alternative strategies for the future. The program: whatdesigncando

The jury of the Graphic Design Festival in Breda/Netherland has to evaluteted more than 2,100 posters by students, professional and amateur graphic designers from 69 countries. An international jury consisting of Richard van der Laken (Designpolitie / What Design Can Do), Mariina Bakić (Une Saison Graphique - Le Havre, France) and Goetz Gramlich (Mut zur Wut - Heidelberg, Germany) together with festival director Dennis Elbers had the hard job to select the winning designs. “The winning selection is a mix of typographical, illustrative and photographic images with a sharp, clear and often personal point which is visualized in an intelligent way” said juror Goetz Gramlich. According to director Dennis Elbers the selection is a good representation of the submissions with 27 professionals, 21 students and two amateurs from 19 countries as winners. Their posters will be presented at the festival from April 17 - 27. Two out of three citizens in Germany's federal state of Hessen find their life stressful. One in four feel they are under constant pressure. And levels are rising: every second person feels that their life has become more stressful in the past three years, according to a study by the health insurance Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) in Hessen. The phenomenon “stress” also was the topic of a poster competition for students at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Offenbach in the summer term 2013, conducted in cooperation with TK in Hessen. Intuitively students identified the factors which are the most predominant triggers for stress according to the study by TK, and turned them into posters. The winners are:
