Play instinct. German theatre in the past 50 years.
by Agnes Kalla @ 2011
German speaking countries with more than 200 publicly subsidised national, federal and communal stages comprise a unique landscape of theatres. This work looks back to the play seasons of the past six decades. It recalls the programmes and analyses them along several categories. The work also considers information about theatre as a commercial enterprise, its financial structure and its human resources issues. To deal with the sheer mass of information, concentration on a few exemplary institutions was inevitable. As a result the work has focused on the 22 theatres of the 20 largest German cities. Three interviews with theatre artists enhance the work since they add both personal perspective and theory.
