Science Fiction is dead

The notion of the »transparent man« has become commonplace Germany, but in everyday life we do not really think about it. In fact new technologies now allow for more data collection than ever. The series of posters »Science Fiction is dead« depicts banal situations in which data can be stolen. Formally based on the science fiction comic strips of the 1940s, such as Flash Gordon, those stealing data are depicted as monsters. That reflects on one hand the absurdity of today's world and on the other the threat to the individual. These posters refer to the Big Brother Award. This award was created by experts on privacy protection to shame violators of privacy laws. Created in Great Brittan in 1998 with a German version since 2000 the award is now being given globally in 19 countries. »Data protection is a thing of the past and technologically outdated« (Hal Varian, Berkeley). And that is why Science Fiction is dead – what once was Science fiction today is a scary reality.
