»NO rebels!«

by Samira Ramic © 2010

The aim is to rebel, as long as this is still possible. At university we are still free but well supervised at the same time; we have the chance to make our own decisions. But what happens afterwards? We will have to comply with the wishes of our employers, we have to obey. For me my diploma was the last chance to design without constraint before reality gets to me. But once the work lay before me freshly bound into a book, I realised I was not content with it. Therefore I decided to go to the book binding studio and cut the whole book into two halves. This courageous, self-critical, emotional and wild act showed me that the work only could have really developed in this particular way: rebellion and nay-saying had grown slowly and had taken on a life of their own. Now, on the left hand side of the book is an obnoxious Little Red Riding Hood, that develops like a Polaroid image from page to page. On the right hand side are photographs and illustrations depicting possible ways of saying no.
