MegaThin – A walk on the thin line
by Susanne Grote © 2008
Mega is an international magazine for Kult. The first edition with the title MegaThin deals with the cult surrounding dieting and slimness and allows the reader to glimpse into the fascinating and alien world of people with eating disorders. An eating disorder is illness, lifestyle and religion all wrapped into one. Here you find the basic ideas, guiding principles, recipes and suggestions for the appropriate music and debates about how to throw up most efficiently.
The aesthetics of this edition are based on the beautiful surface of advertising and simultaneously on the ideals of people with an eating disorder. Their world seems to be dissolving and represents their wish that their own body might disappear too. The magazine uses the usual means of photographic modification: filters and softeners generate an idyllic image. Pages are numbered backwards and occasionally the paper swells out of place to signify what this is all about: we all want to be slim and beautiful.
